Neural Prolotherapy (aka Lyftogt Technique)
There are few pain treatment modalities that are as effective as Neural Prolotherapy (NPT). A relatively recent discovery by Dr. John Lyftogt of Christ Church, New Zealand this technique offers quick and effective pain relief to thousands of Americans who are suffering from chronic pain.
This technique is based on the theory that superficial nerves are the basis of chronic pain after injury or overuse. These superficial nerves that run just under the skin are the cause of chronic pain and dysfunction. By using a weak Dextrose solution injected under the skin over and around painful and tender areas, the dextrose actually heals the nerve dysfunction that perpetuates the sensation of chronic pain. This then allows the connective tissue around the nerves to heal stopping the cascade of inflammatory and pain messages continuously being outputted.
Patients will note immediate relief of pain without anesthetics and increased range of motion. Patients are treated for all trigger points and pain points before leaving the office. Follow-up ranges from 1 week to 2 months depending on the extent of the injury and chronicity of the pain. Neural Prolotherapy usually precludes the need to further treat underlying structures in the case of fibromyalgia, tendonitis, neuritis, neuralgia etc. In the case of joint or tendon hypermobilization or tears, often Biopuncture or Traditional Prolotherapy will be done in conjunction to full resolution of the underlying cause of the pain.
The science of neural prolotherapy was discussed in a 2011 journal article found in the Journal of Prolotherapy. Dr. Wang has personally trained with Dr. John Lyftogt and, Dr. Liza Maniquiz-Smigel to learn the art and science of this innovative therapy.
